Why Painting is Like Baking Cookies

Sue here just to give a beginner’s reminder that creativity should be fun, not stressful!

When people walk into a painting class for the first time, they often say:

“I’m not artistic.”

“I can’t even draw a stick figure.”

Sound familiar? I hear it all the time!

Here’s the good news — painting isn’t about being perfect. It’s about relaxing, experimenting, and letting the colors surprise you. Think of it like baking cookies: sometimes they come out perfectly round, sometimes they’re a little funny-shaped… but they’re still delicious! 🍪

Every Painting Starts with a Mess

When you first begin, your canvas might look wild — blobs, streaks, and colors that don’t make sense yet. That’s okay! Every artist (even the professionals) starts with a mess.

The magic happens when you keep going — layer by layer, your painting starts to take shape. Don’t give up too soon; that “messy middle” is part of the process!

Your Style Is What Makes It Special

If your snowman leans a little to the side or your cat looks more like a raccoon, don’t sweat it — that’s what makes it yours!

No two cookies look the same, and no two paintings should either. The best art comes from personality, not perfection. At our classes and paint parties, folks are always in awe of how different everyone’s spin is on what they’re painting - that’s the fun part!

A Simple Beginner Tip

Start with big brushes and big shapes. Focus on filling in the background first, then move to the main subject, and finish with highlights and little details.

You’ll be amazed how each step adds up to something beautiful — one layer at a time. 🖌️

Paint, Laugh, Repeat

We do laugh a lot at our events - it’s good for the soul too, especially hanging out with people who have a common interest. And the best way to get better at painting is to paint often — and have fun doing it! (I love painting late at night or early in the morning when the house is quiet (not both in the same day tho, lol)!) Whether you join a paint and sip night or paint along at home, remember: the goal is to enjoy it, along with that sense of satisfaction that comes from creating something.

Join us, when your schedule allows, for a fun, no-pressure painting class! Better yet, bring a friend and create something uniquely you.

Here’s a future class that fits the theme of this blog! Happy painting!
